MCMC Investigates Social Media Abuse In Kedah And Kelantan

CYBERJAYA, 4 February 2016 --- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) together with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) continued their operations on those found to have abused social media in Kedah and Kelantan. In a raid conducted in Alor Setar and Kota Bahru earlier this week, two men aged 26 and 57 years old were remanded under suspicion of uploading content that is offensive in nature in December last year.

Communication devices belonging to the suspects were confiscated to aid the investigation. The improper use of network facilities or service is an offence as stipulated in Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998; which includes transmitting any comment, request, suggestion or other communication which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.

A person who commits an offence under this section shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine of not more than RM50,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.
