ICT And Aviation Experts Identify Tasks And Future Issues At The ITU Focus Group Meeting On Aviation Applications Of Cloud Computing For Flight Data Monitoring

04 Dis 2014
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 December 2014 - The 3-day ITU Focus Group on Aviation Applications of Cloud Computing for Flight Data Monitoring (FG AC) meeting of more than 70 experts in ICT and the aviation industry from around the globe ended positively with all sides agreeing to identify the tasks that needed to be carried out to standardize the aviation application and identify the issues that would arise in the future.

Senior Director for MCMC Licensing and Assignment Division, Norizan Baharin, who was also the chair of the FG AC, said that the outcome is a success since the objective of the inaugural FG AC is to identify the required international standard for aviation using cloud computing for real time flight data monitoring.

"It is safe to say the attendees and remote participants (via teleconference) who are from relevant international authorities, aviation experts, aviation bodies and aircraft operators are willing to explore and work on the idea. The next meeting will be held in February 2015 in Montreal, Canada," said Norizan.

The idea to use cloud computing for flight data was first mooted in April this year by Dato' Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Minister of Communications and Multimedia during the ITU World Telecommunications Development Conference in Dubai. At the conference, he had urged the industry to develop a better way to constantly monitor flight data and what transpires inside the cockpit during flights.

According to Norizan, FG AC will identify, in close collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other partners, the requirements for an international telecommunication standard for an aviation cloud for real-time monitoring of flight data. This will include the protection and security, data ownership and access to flight data.

An Expert Dialogue on Real-time Monitoring of Flight Data facilitated by the ITU from 26 - 27 May 2014 highlighted the need to address the following long-term tasks, the completion of which would be an important contribution towards the establishment of international standards for the use of an aviation cloud for real-time monitoring of flight data.

FG AC is open to ITU Member States, Sector Member, Associates and Academic Institutions and to any individual from a country which is a member of ITU and who is willing to contribute to the work; this includes individuals who are also members or representatives of interested standards development organizations.
