An app-t event for coders

27 Aug 2013, The Star

PETALING JAYA: Local coders have been challenged to show off their skills at a 24-hour mobile app-making contest next month.

Named Mobile Developers Day 2013, the event is hosted by both the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and US-based telecommunications company AT&T.

Up for grabs is a US$10,000 (RM33,001) cash prize to the team that makes the best app within that time.

“This is an important event,” said MCMC broadband management division head Nor Akmar Shah Minan.

“It’s the first-of-its-kind in the Asia-Pacific region, and it’s held with AT&T in recognition of Malaysia’s app industry.”

To take place at Kuala Lumpur’s Westin Hotel on Sept 7, MCMC expects to see up to 80 developers at the event, with hopes for as many interesting apps as possible.

Nor Akmar said that after building an app, each team would be given three minutes to show it off to a panel of judges from MCMC, AT&T and industry experts.

They will be judged on their app’s ability, its originality and use of new technology.

A US$3,000 (RM9,903) and US$1,000 (RM3,301) cash prizes will also be given to the contest’s runners-up.

After the contest, MCMC will give the winners an opportunity to present their apps to delegates at Hawaii’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Telecommunications (APECTEL) in September and later at KL’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit in October.

Nor Akmar added that developers would get a chance to learn more about app-making from AT&T at the event.

App buyers, she said, would also be present to see what the local coders had in store.

The event is held to generate new ideas for Malaysia’s app-making community.
