KOTA KINABALU: Malaysians must use their discretion when viewing online materials to avoid being influenced by those who are bent on spreading deviationist teachings.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Maj-Gen (R) Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the government could not keep track of everything posted on the internet.

“We are living in an age of open skies as far as the internet is concerned. As such, there are no closed doors,” he said.

The public, he added, could thus be exposed to those trying to spread such teachings.

“The government views the matter seriously and is trying its best in keeping tabs on websites that promotes wayward philosophies,” he said at a religious seminar here recently.

Jamil added that a special panel under the Islamic Affairs Department had been set up end of last year to tackle the issue at national and state levels.

He said the panel was being assisted by officials from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the Immigration Department, police and the religious councils in the respective states.
