MELAKA, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- The public has been advised to check the authenticity of information found in a website connected to a government or agency before using it as reference.

Secretary-general of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) Datuk Suriani Ahmad said anyone who finds a fake government or agency website should immediately report it to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“Netizens can also refer to the portal sebenarnya.my if they have doubts about a government website as this portal was created to tackle the problem of fake news in the country.

“I also urge all Malaysians who suspect that information on a website is false, to go to the sebenarnya.my portal," she said.

Suriani was speaking to reporters after visiting the booth of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) at the exhibition at the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2019 campaign here today. Also present was Bernama’s Chief Executive Officer, Nurini Kassim.

Yesterday, Bernama observed that there was a fake website which was similar to the official website of the news agency.

Bernama has stressed that the website is not its and is believed to have been created to confuse the public.

The sebenarnya.my portal was created by the MCMC in 2017 to curb the spread of fake news and ensure that the public get authentic news.
