DEWAN NEGARA: A million illegal buntings taken down in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: As of October this year, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has taken down 955,548 illegal buntings and other advertisements around the city, the Dewan Negara was told.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said last year DBKL took down 500,000 illegal advertisements.

"DBKL carries out special operations to take down these illegal advertisements, almost on a daily basis as we view this problem seriously," he said in reply to a question by Senator Baharudin Abu Bakar.

Nong Chik said DBKL also worked closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to have the phone numbers of companies that have put up such illegal advertisements blacklisted.

"We hope this will serve as a deterrent to stem the rampant display of illegal advertisements, which are not only an eyesore but also deface the road signs.
"So far we have managed to cancel 726 phone numbers," he said.

Later to a question by Senator Datuk Syed Ibrahim Kader, Nong Chik said as of August this year, 5.2 million vehicles are registered in Kuala Lumpur.

"Out of this, 1.51 million are motorcycles. Currently there are 4,217 motorcycle parking lots available in 97 places all in the Central Business District. This does not include parking lots in commercial buildings and private properties," he said.

Nong Chik added that the ministry was aware of limited parking lots for motorcycles around the city and is working hard to address the problem.

"To meet the shortage of parking bays for motorcycles, we try to find available space that can be converted into parking lots especially in places such as banks, supermarkets and offices," he said.
