Focus to reduce cyber crime through education

JOHOR BARU: Impersonating, hacking, falsely accusing and even threatening through social media websites are among the most common cyber crime complaints received nationwide.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) outreach and engagement division head Eneng Faridah Iskandar said the commission had received over 1,200 cyber crime complaints nationwide since January.

“Although the figure is almost similar to last year, we are hoping to reduce online crime rates by next year,” she told reporters when met at the Twtup Johor 2013 in Danga Bay here on Saturday.

She added that the “Click Wisely” programme launched by MCMC in July last year had helped create awareness on cyber crime especially among youngsters.

“We have been able to reach out to about 150,000 Internet users mainly youths to educate them on Internet safety via this programme.

“In the southern region, MCMC has been able to reach an audience of over 30,000 through its 127 programmes conducted statewide,” she said.

Eneng said the programme was focus to educate Internet users on the dangers lurking online and the precautionary steps that should be taken to avoid being a victim of cyber crime.

“With social media being accessible to almost everyone of all ages, it is essential to understand the dangers one may encounter while surfing the net.

“As for the complaints forwarded, we would conduct investigations under Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 before taking further action,” she added.

She also advised users to be more alert while surfing the net and think about the consequences before clicking away.

Thousands of avid Twitter users thronged the Iskandar Malaysia Information Centre at Danga Bay here to checked-in via their Twitter online accounts and participate in a line up of activities.
