30 Apr 2013, The Star

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned those responsible for spreading false text messages to stop immediately or face legal action.

In a statement, the commission said spreading false information via SMS or social media was an offence under Section 211 and 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carried a maximum fine of RM50,000 and/or one year imprisonment upon conviction.

“From our monitoring of complaints received and recent cases referred by the police, the number of malicious and false claims spreading on SMSes and social media has been on the rise in recent weeks,” it said.

The commission also reminded the public to verify all information they receive online before forming any views or forwarding the information.
