CYBERJAYA, April 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will showcase for the first time some real-life applications powered by 5G, the next generation of mobile network evolution, at Perbadanan Putrajaya near here from April 18 to April 21.

Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak said some of the applications on showcase are autonomous self-driving vehicles, drones for various digital mapping and monitoring, holoportation, precision farming, remote healthcare diagnosis and consultation.

"We want to showcase to the people and industry that Malaysia is at a leading edge of preparing a future infrastructure," he told a media briefing on the preparation for the 5G showcase, here today.

A testbed launch to showcase 5G will take place on April 18 and to be officiated by the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, while the showcase will be opened to the public from April 20 to 21.

Al-Ishsal said 5G was not only to support consumer devices but also the demands of other sectors including automotive, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, education and smart city.

He said 5G was part of the initiatives towards achieving the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP), a government's plan to improve and deliver the fibre and overall broadband coverage at affordable price to the people and industry.

In November last year, MCMC established a national 5G task force with various key stakeholders and industry players to study and recommend a holistic strategy for 5G deployment.

It has four working groups that will manage the business case, infrastructure, spectrum management and allocation, as well as regulatory.

Early April, two 5G networks were established in Putrajaya at four launching locations, while five networks would be set up for the launch on April 18.
