MCMC, Mynic seek domain name feedback

27 Jan 2006, The Star
PETALING JAYA: Mynic, Malaysia’s designated country-code top level domain name managing organisation, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) are seeking a second round of public feedback on their plan to bring back second-level domain names. The first round of feedback was published in Public Consultation Report on Reintroducing 2nd Level".my" Domain Name Space. This document contains a revision of the original reintroduction plan and is available at www.mcmc.gov.my and www.mynic.net.my. Mynic originally allowed the registration of individualised second-level domain names in line with international practice. For example, applicants were allowed to register a domain name like "domain.my." But in the late 1990s, the trend was to categorise domain names into activity segments, like ".gov", ".edu," ".mil." This means that applicants must register their names in one of these few categories. These classifications became the second-level domain names, under which individual domains were given third level names. Since then, Mynic has received requests from local and international customers for shorter and easier-to-remember ".my" domain names, MCMC said in a statement last week. The public is invited to e-mail comments or queries to [email protected]. The deadline for submission is 5pm on Feb 10. They can also phone in their queries to (03) 8991-7272 or by fax to (03) 8991-7277.
