MCMC Awards Research Grants To Five Universities
04 Nov 2014, bernama
SUBANG JAYA, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today awarded rersearch grants ranging from RM70,000 to RM200,000 to five tertiary institutions to undertake research projects related to the use of networked media and its effects on different audiences.
The grants, provided under its Networked Media Research Collaboration Programme (NMCRP,) were awarded to Universiti Sains Malaysia, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
MCMC Chief Officer of Industry Regulation and Supervision Toh Swee Hoe said the NMCRP was mooted to generate knowledge resources that would create further value and evidence-based understanding of the influences and impact of networked media in the society.
Toh said this in his welcoming remarks at the Networked Media Research Seminar 2014 themed 'Digital Citizens of the Future', here today.
"MCMC is cognizant of the necessity as a regulator and developer of the industry, to be forward-thinking in identifying emerging issues and research gaps for policy and regulation.
"This knowledge supports the development of targeted programmes and a more effective use of resources to educate and create awareness among the general public on the use of communications and multimedia applications, services, and facilities," he said.
The recipients were given the opportunity to share their individual research proposals with more than 400 participants from various ministries, non-governmental organisations, universities and the private sector at the seminar.
Launched in April 2008, the NMCRP which is aimed at strengthening research and knowledge resources in relation to networked media that will inform policy and regulatory decisions as well as media literacy initiatives and activities, had to date funded 15 research projects.
