MCMC Calls On Varsities To Participate In Networked Media Research Collaboration Programme 2015

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Academy has invited institutions of higher learning to participate in the next tranche of research focus area related to digital and media under its Networked Media Research Collaboration Programme (NMRCP) 2015.

MCMC Academy Advisor Toh Swee Hoe said they were invited to submit research proposals in areas namely digital and media literacy, impact of new media on the population, impact of MCMC's Smart Community initiatives, digital inclusion, internet, medicine, and health; internet, religion and spirituality and; regulating the internet.

"The proposals will go through a selection process by a panel and the chosen proposals will share the research grants worth RM1 million," he told Bernama after attending the Research Collaboration Seminar 2015 here today.

The closing date for submission of proposals is by noon on Jan 22 next year.

Toh said the NMRCP, wholly funded by the MCMC, aimed at strengthening research and knowledge resources in relation to networked media that would inform policy and regulatory decisions and practices, as well as supports advocacy and outreach activities.

The programme has committed funding for 15 research collaborations to date.

Earlier, approximately 400 participants attended the Research Collaboration Seminar 2015, which showcased on-going research collaborations between MCMC and five local universities, namely Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

The five universities were awarded the research grants in 2014.

During the seminar, the universities also presented works-in-progress insights and initial findings on a broad range of topics which included media literacy, online safety, the impact of new media on national consciousness and identities, how social media impacts attitudes and behaviours among the young, and practical steps at curtailing and addressing excessive internet reliance.
