MCMC: Expired, Unused Mobile Devices Can Be Disposed Of At Telecommunication Shops

CYBERJAYA, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Expired and unused mobile devices, including cell phone, tablet, charger and accessories, dubbed e-waste, can now be disposed of safely at 72 telecommunication shops nationwide.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie said telecommunication companies, such as Maxis, Celcom, DiGi, Altel and U-Mobile had also provided collection boxes for such e-waste at their outlets in conjunction with the Mobile e-Waste: Old Phone, New Life programme.

He said the e-waste would then undergo recycling and reacquisition processes with the cooperation from Shan Poornam Metals Sdn Bhd, a fully-licensed reacquisition service company.

Halim said as a cell phone had the average lifespan of only two years, it was estimated that over 42 million of cell phones registered before 2013 could be deemed 'expired'.

"That means there are millions of unused mobile devices still being kept in houses or have been disposed of in an unsafe manner," he said at the launch of the programme by Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari here today.

Halim said those devices, including lithium batteries, contained toxic materials that could be hazardous to human health if not disposed of safely.

"It is estimated that a million e-waste or unused mobile devices will be collected throughout the year-long programme which began today," he added.
