MCMC: Good to see telcos cutting charges for broadband

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission welcomes telecommunication companies that plan to reduce their broadband charges, a move that will see more consumers having access to the facility.

Commission chairman Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie said by providing telecommunication services, including broadband at affordable prices, telcos would benefit as they could expect brisk business due to higher demand.

At the same time, he said, it would help to lessen end users’ burden and allow more people, including the lower income, to enjoy broadband service.

“The commission will conduct a review on the retail pricing and will work with the industry to develop broadband packages that are affordable for the long-term benefit of end users.

“We are also planning for a series of discussions with the industry regarding retail price regulations to make sure they are current and suitable with the fast growing communications and multimedia sector,” Dr Halim added.

Earlier, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek called on telcos to offer reasonable prices for their broadband services.

He argued that this was possible since charges imposed by companies such as Telekom Malaysia and Time Dotcom – which sell fibre optic access to the telcos – were now low.

He pointed out that broadband service had become a necessity rather than luxury. However, the minister said this was a call, not a directive.

“I hope my suggestion is well received by all.”
