SINGAPORE: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) seeks to make its mark at CommunicAsia 2013 by showcasing what it is currently doing to ensure the online safety and security of Malaysians, as well as highlighting the nation's broadband initiatives to event visitors.

"In addition to enforcement, we feel that education and awareness of the general public is critical. As users, all of us ought to know about issues on the Internet that affect us," says Eneng Faridah Iskandar, head of the outreach and engagement division at MCMC.

The MCMC exhibition booth at CommunicAsia highlights the organisation's Klik Dengan Bijak (Click Wisely) programme, which was launched in July last year.

It promotes safety, security and responsibility amongst Malaysians while on the Internet.

Besides that, its exhibition booth also shares with visitors the story of Malaysia's journey towards achieving nationwide broadband connectivity.

"We also have various service providers here who have joined us to showcase what Malaysia has to offer to the world and also to share what Malaysians are currently enjoying," adds Eneng.

Eneng says MCMC also hopes to learn from other countries about effective ways to deal with new media issues.

"We want to learn about the programmes they have put in place to reach different target groups (on Internet safety and security)," she explains.

"It is within our national policy to be a global hub for information and communication services. In order for us to achieve that, we need to look at international best practices and to work towards being on par with the growth experienced in other countries.

"We would like to get ideas (from others here) and to create opportunities for sharing information in the future."

Malaysia has been participating in CommunicAsia since 2005 and has received strong support from various government agencies including the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, and the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water.

According to Singapore Exhibition Services, the organiser of CommunicAsia 2013, there are altogether 62 Malaysian exhibitors present at CommunicAsia and EnterpriseIT this year, while BroadcastAsia has 26 exhibitors.
