MCMC holds mini carnival on Internet

18 Mar 2015, The Borneo Post

KUCHING: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) held a one-day mini carnival at the 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M) at Kampung Tanjung Bundong in Samarahan yesterday.

The mini carnival, known as the Click Wisely Programme, was aimed at raising awareness of cybercrimes, among others.

MCMC Outreach and Engagement Division senior director Eneng Faridah Iskandar explained that the mini carnival was part of the initiative to engage the local community around the PI1M on how to remain safe online and be responsible Internet users.

“Although most people are already experienced netizens, we hope to remind them that there exist positive and negative sides of the Internet.

“We hope to create digital citizens who are well-connected to the Internet but media-literate, knowing that not everything on the Internet is true.

“The programme adopts an interactive approach towards imparting valuable messages ranging from how to behave online and safe practices such as check the authenticity of information before sharing and not contributing to social media ills like cyber bullying and scams,” she told a press conference at the centre yesterday.Eneng said the programme was well into its second phase since its nationwide launch in 2012.

“In the second phase we are concentrating on efforts to educate children aged 13 to 18 and their parents and guardians. We want to groom savvy and responsible digital citizens who use the Internet correctly with good ethics and values.

“Parents have to be their children’s good friends so that if their children run into problems, they have someone to turn to or talk to. That is why we hope parents will be more aware and involved in the Internet usage of their children.

“Our key messages in the second phase are the dangers of false information, cyber bullying, over-sharing and financial scams,” she said.

As it is the first-term school holidays, the Click Wisely Programme had many different interactive games and booths targeted at different age groups, including a special appearance by programme mascots Arif and Maya.

Currently there are 519 1Malaysia Internet Centres based in semi-rural and rural locations throughout the nation. The centre at Kampung Tanjung Bundong is one of the 119 centres in Sarawak. Equipped with computers and trainers, the centre is able to conduct regular ICT training sessions, which include basic computing, typing and web design. A biweekly Click Wisely awareness module is also conducted at the centre.

PI1M Kpg Tanjung Bundong manager Dayang Hafiza Awang Serudin was among those present.
