MCMC Organizes a 3-Day Workshop On Anti-Spam

Cyberjaya, 3 May 2005 - The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is organizing a 3-day workshop on anti-Spam starting today until 5th May 2005. The workshop is conducted in relation to the last ASEAN Telecommunications Regulatory Council (ATRC) meeting in Vientiane, Laos (July 2004) where the ATRC has agreed to the setting up of a Working Group (WG) to work on anti-SPAM measures led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). According to Adelina Iskandar, Head of Corporate Communications, MCMC "The workshop is titled Anti-SPAM Strategies - the Way Forward for the ATRC. Its purposes are to do a stock-take on where ATRC is on anti-Spam measures, to build capacity among ATRC members and to raise the level of cooperation amongst ATRC members in moving forward". She added, "Malaysia has invited speakers from many organizations in the region and has received positive responses from many that these speakers will be able to attend and share their experiences with the ATRC. The 3rd day of the workshop is a closed-door session for ATRC members only, whilst the first 2 days will be open to some key organizations in Malaysia". The invited speakers are from regulatory organizations such as the Australian Communications Authority (ACA); Australian Department of Communications, IT and Arts; Authority for Info-Communications Industry of Brunei; the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan; the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA); the US Federal Trade Commission; International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD). Amongst the speakers who will give their presentations are Mr Shamsul Jafni Shafie from MCMC who will present "Stocktaking of Anti-Spam Regulatory Framework within ATRC Countries", Mr Anthony Wing from ACA, Australia on Legislation - "Opt-In", Ms Elena Gasol Ramos from FTC (USA) on Legislation-"Opt-Out" and "The London Action Plan", Mr Meng-Chow Kang of Microsoft on "Microsoft Strategy to Combat Spam-sender ID initiatives", Mr Leong Keng Thai of IDA, Singapore on "Singapore's Strategy to Combat Spam", Ms Claudia Sarrocco of OECD on "OECD's Action Plan on Anti-Spam", and Mr Tom Dale of DCITA on "APEC Tel Action Plan on Anti-Spam." On a related event, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had also recently entered into a bilateral MOU with the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) and the Korean Information Security Agency (KISA) on cooperation in countering spam. The agreement among the agencies would assist with cooperation at an operational level. The MoU is focused on sharing knowledge, information and intelligence about known sources of spam, network vulnerabilities, methods of spam propagation, and technical, educational and policy solutions to the spam problem. It will also focus on putting anti-spam solutions and strategies into action.
