KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The Communications and Multimedia Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received 403 complaints from the public involving offences pertaining to insults and threats between January and May this year.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari told the Dewan Negara today that of the total cases, 142 complaints involved threats of spreading personal videos and pictures of victims had been extended for further probe by the police. He said, offences involving criminal extortion or disclosing information of individuals for revenge purposes are under the jurisdiction of the police, but MCMC had always cooperated with the police in fighting such crimes on social media.

“It covers cooperation in monitoring, detection, information sharing as well as aspects of digital forensics,” he said when replying to Senator Datuk Koh Chin Han on the matter. Jailani said at the same time, MCMC was carrying out awareness and educational programmes to foster a culture of smart media consumerism so that new media users were not entangled with crime. To date, there are 20.1 million Internet users in the country, while 16.8 million of the total are active social media users. -
