CYBERJAYA: A suspect who allegedly insulted the Sultan of Terengganu on his Facebook page has been located by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with cooperation from the Police, and is now under detention for questioning.

MCMC views the abuse of social media very seriously, such as uploading content that is derogatory in nature especially that involving the monarchy.

"The laws of the nation are enforced whether it is offline or online. A crime is still a crime, even if it's on social media," said MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi.

"Social media users should be aware that they are not invincible as they thought. We urge members of the public to be careful and to be more responsible when communicating in cyberspace. Those who break the law will be brought to justice," added Datuk Sharil.

If found guilty, the suspect may be fined not more than RM50,000, sentenced to a year's jail or both.
