KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be conducting a review of telecommunication retail rates to ease the burden of the people.

MCMC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie said MCMC would be working with the industry to develop affordable broadband packages for the benefit of the people in the long run.

He said affordable prices for telecommunication services such as broadband packages would not only lighten the people's burden but help raise the take-up rate of such packages.

"It will ensure the people especially lower income group would not be left behind in the digital era. With affordable broadband prices, it would create more demand for content to boost the local content industry," he said in a statement here today.

He was commenting on the call by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek on telecommunication companies to offer lower broadband packages so that more would be able to enjoy the service last Thursday.

Halim said MCMC would call for a series of discussions with the industry in the second quarter of this year to regulate retail prices in line with current situation.
