MENUMBOK (Kuala Penyu), Jan 10 (Bernama) -- Menumbok, a hamlet located on mainland Sabah and facing Labuan island, has not been left out of mainstream development, including in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Though some 147 kilometres from the state capital Kota Kinabalu, Menumbok is currently enjoying a good broadband penetration rate.

Kampung Mempakul in Menumbok had the honour of being turned into a "Wi-Fi" village since March 21 last year under National Broadband Initiative which is spearheaded by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), an agency under the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry which is lad by Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

The initiative aims to narrow the digital divide between rural and urban areas in the country.

Faridzuan Wong Abdullah, 48 the operator of Menumbok's rural library, said Menumbok residents were very glad that Kampung Mempakul was now a "Wi-Fi" village as they now had access to Internet facilities just like their urban counterparts.
