Networked Media Content Seminar Tomorrow To Highlght Research Findings

CYBERJAYA, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will hold the Networked Media Content Seminar tomorrow to showcase the findings of selected research under the Networked Media Research Collaboration programme with public and private institutions of higher learning.

The two selected research are "An Intervention for Problematic Internet Use Among Young Adults: A Pilot Study" by Dr Ke Guek Nee from the International Medical University and "Captivated with Facebook: Constructions, Contexts and Consequences" by Assoc Prof Dr Shanthi Balraj from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Head of the Monitoring and Enforcement Division of MCMC, Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said the joint collaboration was mooted in 2008 with the aim of enhancing knowledge, research and development in relation to the Networked Media Policy and Regulations.

"We allocated RM500,000 in grants for public and private institutions of higher learning to conduct research," he told Bernama, here, today.

The one-day seminar will highlight the importance of networked media content among the young generation and the importance of users to use the new media in a more responsible manner to reap benefits.

Zulkarnain said the seminar would focus on several aspects, namely the new media, legal perspective to promote public education and awareness relating to cybercrime, protection of users, self-regulation, Internet addiction and mental health threats to users.

He said about 300 people, including industry players and students, were expected to attend the seminar at Marriot Putrajaya, here.

The seminar includes a panel discussion on "Engage and Interact Productively and Responsibly to Unlock the Value of the New Media".

There will also be presentations on "Cyber Bullying Among Adolescents" by Dr Hanif Suhairi from Universiti Malaysia Perlis, "Protection of Users: CMA Perspective (Devi Annamalai from New Media Department, Monitoring and Enforcement Division, MCMC), "Cybercrime Trends in Malaysia" (ACP Mohd Kamarudin Md Din from the Cyber and Multimedia Crimes Division, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department), and "Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code and Self-Regulation" (executive director, Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia, Mohd Mustaffa Fazil Mohd Abdan).
