No more access in Malaysia to Islam-insulting film

17 Sep 2012, New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR: The Islam-insulting film "Innocence of Muslims" can no longer be accessed over YouTube in Malaysia after the government acted to prevent its online broadcast.

Attempts by Bernama today to access the film failed, indicating that Internet users in the country were prevented from viewing the controversial film, which insulted Prophet Muhammad and Islam.

An apology appeared on the screen, thus: "This content is not available in your country due to a legal complaint. Sorry about that."

The film, directed by one Sam Bacile, 52, of California, and broadcast over YouTube, sparked anger among Muslims around the world.

Two days ago, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Malaysia would stop the online broadcast of the film.

Rais was quoted as saying that he had asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to discuss with other authorities to deny access to the film over YouTube or other channels.
