Optimise digital TV to improve knowledge

IPOH, Oct 15 -- Television viewers who witnessed the transition of analogue to digital broadcast last night should optimise the new technology to increase their knowledge and contribute towards building a sustainable community.

Effective midnight yesterday, the analogue broadcast for the country’s northern and eastern regions, covering Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Penang, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu was shut off and replaced with digital broadcast.

The transition from analogue TV to myFreeview digital TV was done in stages with the analogue switch off for the central and southern regions on Sept 30. For Sabah and Sarawak, the transition will be done on Oct 31.

Perak Communications, Multimedia, Non-governmental Organisations and Information Committee chairman Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim said free myFreeview digital TV decoders will be given to recipients of Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH), especially those in the B40 group.

As such, those who are eligible for the free myFreeview digital TV decoders are advised to collect the item at either the office of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), penghulu (village head) or their respective state elected representative before end of November, he told reporters after watching the analogue switch off at the Perak MCMC office here last night.

He said some of the recipients had yet to claim the free decoders because they did not know its use.

“We are heading towards a digital life, so we have got to incorporate it in our daily lives and my hope is for all the people in Perak, especially in the rural areas, to take advantage of this myFreeview TV programmes,” he added.

With myFreeview digital TV, viewers can enjoy a myriad of TV channels, radio and new applications like online shopping and interactive learning, including TV1, TV2, TV3, NTV7, 8TV, TV9, Al Hijrah TV and Bernama News Channel (BNC).

In KEDAH, Kedah Information, Communications and Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) chairman Mohd Firdaus Ahmad said the digital TV broadcast offered better quality service to the public besides, the choice of various TV channels.

“We have to keep abreast with the development in technology that we want to implement to build a sustainable community...we have to understand the technology. So if we want the people to generally improve their economy, knowledge, we need to embrace the new technology,” he added.

He said this to reporters after the switching off of the analogue broadcast for the northern region at the TV transmitting station in Gunung Jerai in Yan last night.

The transition from the analogue broadcasts to myFreeview digital TV broadcast began at 12.30 am today with the TV screen displaying an announcement on the matter.
