Pahang Surpasses 2015 Broadband Penetration Target

08 Jul 2013, Bernama
KUANTAN, July 8 (Bernama) -- Pahang has exceeded the 2015 target of 60 per cent broadband penetration by chalking up a 61.1 per cent rate up to May this year, the state legislative assembly was told today.

The Women and Family Development, Communication and Multimedia Committee chairman Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin said the people of Pahang, including in the rural areas, now enjoyed free Internet access with the implementation of the National Broadband Initiative.

"Up to June, there were 466 wireless villages, 54 1Malaysia Internet centres, six libraries with broadband facility and 11 mini broadband centres in Pahang.

"Meanwhile, access to the high-speed broadband being implemented by Telekom Malaysia since 2012 has been achieved by 7,000 premises in Kuantan. This is expected to rise to 10,000 by the end of this year," she said when speaking during the winding-up of debate on the royal address by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, in the assembly.

On the poor coverage of cellular services in several areas in the state, particularly in the interior, Shahaniza said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was identifying suitable locations to build telecommunications towers.
