PI1M Helps Rural Students To Be IT Literate
21 Aug 2013, Bernama
YAN, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The setting up of the 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M), an initiative by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has helped rural students to be literate in information technology (IT).
Student Nurul Liyana Usup, 13, from a poor family in Kampung Seberang Jaya, Kuala Sala near here, said it was PI1M that exposed her to computers, information technology (IT) and the Internet.
"Prior to that, I knew nothing about computers or the Internet. I was even afraid to touch a computer then because I knew nothing about it.
"Now, I know how to use the computer after being taught by teachers at PI1M," she told Bernama when met at the Kuala Sala PI1M here.
Nurul Liyana, a student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Mu'adzam Shah, Kota Sarang Semut, said the facility provided by the government helped her with her school homework and also enabled her to search for more information.
Nur Liyana, whose father is a fisherman, said the presence of PI1M had helped students in the rural areas to be IT literate.
Twelve-year-old Nurul Huda Natasha Ismail said she was now able to do her revision for her coming Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination using computers, instead of just relying on her books.
"It makes studying more interesting," said the student of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Mahawangsa, Kuala Sala here.
She said she used to go to cyber cafes to learn to use the computer, but the condition there was not conducive for studying because it was noisy.
Meanwhile, Kuala Sala PI1M manager, Siti Fatimah Ayob, said the centre offered various activities and programmes on IT for the local community.
"We also assist traders and small entrepreneurs to expand their business through the Internet," he added.
