KUALA LUMPUR: The redemption period for the RM200 smartphone rebate has been extended from one to three months beginning Wednesday, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

"Those who have registered and received confirmation of their registration in early January need not register again as the redemption period has been extended from one to three months," said MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said in a media statement here Wednesday.

He added that the MCMC was in the process of e-mailing all those who have registered to inform them of the new development.

Telecommunications companies and appointed sales representatives have also been informed about the rebate period extension, he said.

More than 440,000 youths aged 21 to 30 have registered for the RM200 rebate and among them, some 60,000 have bought new smartphones.

There are currently some 4,500 sales representatives nationwide offering about 70 smartphone models.
