Sarawak To Have 149 More Communication Towers

SIBU, May 15 (Bernama) -- A total of 149 communication towers costing RM200 million will be built in Sarawak this year, most of them in the rural areas in an effort to widen cellular coverage and internet accessibility.

They are part of 400 communication towers to be built nationwide this year, said Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) director Adiman Ajem.

The communication towers are expected to be completed by year-end or early next year, he said, adding that Sarawak currently has 900 communication towers.

"This will enable more rural folks in isolated areas of the Sibu, Kapit, Miri, and Sarikei divisions as well as those in surrounding areas to enjoy better cellular coverage and internet services," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending a briefing for Sibu municipal councillors on the health effects of radiation from radio and communication transmission here Thursday.

Adiman said communication towers posed no ill effects on the health of residents and those in the vicinity.

"Many people are jittery because of unverified reports on the alleged side effects.

"Malaysia has very strict laws on the setting up of telecommunication towers in order to protect public health," he added.

Adiman said Malaysia abided by the standards set by the World Health Organisation and the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection.

"Scientific studies in the peninsular as well as some 50 local studies indicate that there had been no ill effects posed by such towers.

"Hence, the public should not be unduly worried or oppose plans to build them in their neighbourhood," he added.
