Senior MCMC officer elected as chairman of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT)

Cyberjaya, December 12, 2004 - The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is proud to announce the appointment of Encik Bistamam Siru Abdul Rahman, the General Manager of its Industry Development Division as Chairman of Asia Pacific Telecommunity Management Committee (APT- MC) for the tenure of 2004 - 2006. Encik Bistamam succeeds Mr Toshiyuku Yamada from Japan. Encik Bistamam was previously the Vice-Chairman of the Management Committee for the 2002-2004 terms. His election to the post of the Chairman of APT-MC will contribute substantially to the development of telecommunications and IT services in the APT region especially in Malaysia. His tasks will include pursuing the policies and principles of the General Assembly, supervising the Secretariat's function, reviewing and approving work program, annual budget and accounts and drawing up regulations. The approved work programmes for 2005 includes a large number of training courses, study visits and workshops on new technologies, business development, network management and financing towards HRD capacity building and a series of seminars, meetings and symposiums aimed at broadband and ICT development in the Asia Pacific region, network security, VoIP and other hot topics and issues faced by the sector today. The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) is the leading intergovernmental organisation for the development of telecommunications and ICT in the Asia-Pacific region. The APT was established by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in July 1979 with the objective to promote the development of telecommunications and ICT services in the Asia-Pacific region, with particular emphasis on the developing countries. Currently, the APT comprises of 32 full Members, 4 Associate Members, and 94 Affiliate Members. The Headquarters of the APT is located in Bangkok, Thailand.
