CYBERJAYA: The public are now able to contribute directly vis SMS to the Gaza humanitarian fund thanks to a project set up by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

MCMC Regional Coordination Division Head Mohd Hussin Ali said the fund was set up by the commission last month to create awareness, as well as to ease the burden of the Gazans following a series of bombings by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF).

“Since its establishment two weeks ago, we have received about RM92,000 mobile donations.“It’s easy and you can donate anytime, anywhere. It’s all at the tip of your fingers,” he said. Hussin said, to make a donation, one only needs to SMS GAZA <space><amount> and send it to 13999.

“The donation can be made with the denomination of RM1, RM3, RM5, RM10 or RM20. All you need to do is SMS “GAZA” followed by the amount and send it to 13999. “Your contribution counts, it can change the lives of those in need,” he said.

He added that no surcharge would be imposed on the amount that contributors decide to donate. “As a human being, we should be able to help. Mosques, schools and churches are being bombed. “The Gazans have nowhere to go, no place to stay and no food to eat.

“It’s not about religion, it’s about humanity,” Hussin said, adding that the idea to set up the fund was that of Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

The commission will be collecting the contributions for a month before passing it to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for distribution purposes. “The fund will also be audited by an independent auditors and all telecommunication companies are involved in this as part of their corporate social responsibility programme,” he said.
