MALACCA: A programme entitled “Klik dengan Bijak” initiated by the Government is seen as a holistic approach in providing a safety net to Internet surfers.

The programme is designed to promote Internet in-vulnerabilities and security while revealing ways to avoid the common cyberspace frauds.

Such programme was held recently where group of young scouts (boys and girls) from all over the country were participants of the camp.

One participant, Suzi Nur Atasya, 14, from SMK Permatai Jaya, Johor said through the four-day camp, she gained a lot of insight on Internet security, tips and precautions needed when using applications, emails, online forums, social networking websites, file sharing applications, online games and blogs.

“I consider this has a beneficial camp for me and for my fellow friends as we gain knowledge on the usage of Internet in a safe and positive way.

“In addition, they enhance our awareness of online risks,” she said.

Suzi said this information should be spread to her other younger Malaysians as well due to high number of cyberspace abuses.

“For me, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should also play role to ensure all Internet users are updated with such programme.

“Clicking the unwanted websites can land anyone in trouble and this could be witnessed from numerous cases involving social media correspondence,” she added.

Another participant, Izazie Alanie Ibrahim,13, from SMK Bukit Baru, Malacca said Internet should be a platform to gain knowledge.

“I realised that nowadays Internet is used for the wrong reasons at the programme we are taught to avoid posting or updates that would hurt others,” she said.

Izazie said it was a good programme where participants from the other states could share the knowledge and information.

The ‘Klik dengan Bijak” initiative is an interactive and fun educational-based approach that was designed to promote positive online experience as well as to assist in reducing cybercrimes.

A total of 800 young scouts learned how to manage the issues and risks related to Internet in a fun-filled way in a camp organised by MCMC in collaboration with the National Scouts.

Later in a press conference, chairman of MCMC, Datuk Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi said in addition to enforcement, the that education and awareness of Internet usage is imperative.

He said the move was to create awareness among the people on the importance of correct Internet usage and such programmes would be held from time to time to educate the public especially the young.
