The number of internet users in Malaysia is still staggeringly low, compared with other Asian countries. According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, MCMC, the average number of Internet users in the country, is only seven percent of the entire Malaysian population. MCMC Chairman, Tan Sri Nuraizah Abdul Hamid, said Malaysia lagged far behind Japan, Korea and China in terms of the number of Internet users. This trend must change she said, if Malaysia wants to be at par or compete with other Asian countries. And Malaysia, she pointed out, has that capability. "The total number of Internet users presently in Malaysia is still below 10%, but with the latest development in ICT, the international data corporation or IDC has confirmed through its study, that Malaysia, has the capability to increase its Internet usage to 1.5 million, this year." She was met at an information and communication technology, ICT seminar for secretaries on Wednesday. Tan Sri Nuraizah said the government has already launched various programmes to expose the public to ICT. Malaysia is aiming to increase the number of its Internet users to up to 25 per cent by 2005.
