Three detained for illegal business operation

17 Aug 2012, The Star

PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) seized sex toys and sex stimulant tablets from an illegal business operator along Persiaran Surian in Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya.

Code named Ops Buru, the officers detained three men to facilitate investigations.

They tracked down the shop from the illegal bunting put up.

Public Relations Officer Zainun Zakaria said it was the first time the council’s enforcement officers had conducted such an operation.

“Our initial investigations show they are repeat offenders and targeted those seeking such stuff through illegal advertisements. All three men were fined RM1,000 each for the unlicensed bunting,” she said.

Among the items seized were seven-inch rubber vibrators shaped like the penis, gel vibrators for women and stimulant tablets.

It was learnt that teenagers were among the customers who called and ordered the merchandise.

Zainun said if the three failed to settle the fines within two-weeks, they would be taken to court.

“Ops Buru was in fact an operation to track down firms which put up illegal bunting, advertisement stickers and banners, but our officers came across this business and took action,” she said.

Zainun said there were two raids on Aug 8 and 15 where 1,580 advertisements and buntings were taken down as all did not have the council’s approval and 13 errant firms were issued RM1,000 compounds each.

“From January until August last week, MBPJ had removed 67,179 buntings where 1,625 firms were compounded. Out of the 1,625 firms, 62 were referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to have their mobile phone lines terminated for operating an illegal business,” she added.
