Malaysia To Host The Inaugural ASEAN Makerthon 2017

CYBERJAYA, 8 September 2017 --- Malaysia will host the inaugural ASEAN Makerthon 2017 and Internet of Things (IoT) Information Sharing Workshop beginning today until 10 September at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) former headquarters in Cyberjaya. 

The ASEAN Makerthon 2017 is a regional initiative in line with the objectives of the ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2020 and aims to establish a strong network and presence of makers adopting IoT in the ASEAN region. The program serves as a platform for ASEAN makers to showcase their skills, pitching ideas and creativity in producing prototypes.   

This year’s theme focuses on smart cities, healthcare and agriculture (track, trace, improve, reduce). The program will consist of a one day IoT Information Sharing Workshop, and a maker hackathon where participants are allocated two days to build their proposed prototypes. Throughout the event, participants will be granted full access to the MCMC’s myMaker IoT Lab equipped with equipment such as laser cutters, CNC machine, 3D printers, soldier kits and some basic tools. 

10 ASEAN Member States will send teams of 2-3 members each to participate in the ASEAN Makerthon 2017, as well as participating ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Senior Officials (TELSOM) Dialogue Partners, including China and the Republic of Korea.   

The champion for this event will receive prize money of USD 1,000; 1st runner-up USD800.00 while the 2nd runner-up will bag USD500.00. Certificate of participation will also be issued to all team members.
