MCMC DISPLAYS AGILITY IN ADDRESSING SOCIAL MEDIA ABUSE WHICH DISTRUPTS RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS HARMONY

CYBERJAYA, 3 March 2019 – The internet and social media are turning into the users’ choice for communicating and voicing out views on current issues. However, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) realizes that there are those who abuse them to spread their own agendas with the aim to create racial disunity and disrupt public order; which would then lead to racial and religious polemics.

With regards to this, MCMC, in close collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will not compromise and is committed to act against any party that threatens the security, stability and harmony of the country.

Between 2018 until February 2019, a total of 47 investigation papers were opened by MCMC with five of them being sentenced. During the same period, a total of 2,358 technical assistance and information identification processes to assist the investigation process of enforcement agencies have been carried out by MCMC.

Additionally, a total of 3,407 fake social media accounts including those that were abused for the dissemination of extremist messages, hatred and defamation, as well as 1,163 similar content, were deleted in collaboration with the international operator of social media platforms. Throughout the same period, MCMC also assisted to inform the public regarding 979 false news on social media and the internet; through the sebenarnya.my portal managed by MCMC.

The efforts undertaken by the MCMC will be further enhanced to ensure that any elements that may jeopardize the well-being of the community and the country can be controlled and completely contained. This includes promoting community education through the ‘Klik Dengan Bijak’ advocacy programmes to foster positive and prudent internet usage.

At the same time, the existing provision of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which provides the source of enforcement for social media and internet to the MCMC is being reviewed and fine-tuned, to ensure that the scope and use do not provide any room for misuse.

End.
