MCMC Updates On-Going Research Collaborations With Public Universities And Announces Call For Proposals For Research Priority Areas 2015
PUTRAJAYA, 15 December 2015
--- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today held the Research Collaboration Seminar 2015 attended by approximately 500 participants showcasing on-going research collaborations between MCMC and 5 local universities.
The universities comprising Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia presented works-in-progress insights and initial findings on a broad range of topics which included media literacy, online safety, the impact of new media on national consciousness and identities, how social media impacts attitudes and behaviours among the young, and practical steps at curtailing and addressing excessive internet reliance.
In keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Ensuring Equitable ICT through Digital Inclusion,’ the seminar featured keynote and panel sessions discussing the factors that shape the demand elements from user perspectives of ICT services and technologies.
Also discussed was how these services and its transformative potential can be harnessed for everyone, particularly for the underserved communities and those previously excluded because of geographical or other factors. In providing for the
rakyat
to enjoy high levels of access and delivery of the right services, it is vital that there is an-going dialogue to continuously strive for a more digitally inclusive Malaysia.
Leading the discussions and keynote sessions was Associate Professor Dr. Sarjit Singh Gill, an anthropologist attached to UPM whose scope of work includes how minority groups are interacting with ICTs and how these are impacting societies. Addressing the issue from the supply perspective was Ms. Laina Raveendran Green of GETIT Inc, who shared her insights on initiatives related to inclusionary and sustainable ICT initiatives.
The seminar also saw the announcement of the Networked Media Research Collaboration Programme’s 2015 Call for Proposals to invite applications from Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning to participate in the next tranche of research in the following research focus areas namely digital and media literacy, impact of new media on the population, impact of MCMC’s Smart Community initiatives, digital inclusion, internet, medicine and health; internet, religion and spirituality and regulating the Internet.
The closing date for the Call for Proposal is 12:00 noon, 22 January 2016.
