Various Internet Topics Discussed At Inaugural MCMC Debating Championship

VARIOUS INTERNET TOPICS DISCUSSED AT INAUGURAL MCMC DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP
SERDANG, 20 December 2015
--- 40 teams from 25 institutions of higher learning and high schools pitted their oratory skills at the inaugural MCMC Debating Championship, held at the university’s campus in Serdang, Selangor, recently.
The Serdang Royals Debate Club of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised the three-day debate tournament with the support of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the university’s Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science.
The Serdang Royals Debate Club Advisor, Dr. Moniza Waheed commended the club for their insightful efforts to encourage undergraduates, young adults and even the public to appreciate, understand and use today’s digital applications in a safe, secure and responsible approach.
She explained, “We want youth to understand MCMC’s role in championing the development of Malaysia’s communications and multimedia industry. This young audience, who use the Internet and Social Media for almost everything, from communications and networking, to research, shopping and news updates, must appreciate that within such a digital community, there are rules and regulations to adhere to.
“Working with MCMC ensures that critical topics pertaining to the country’s communications and multimedia landscape, can be discussed intelligently and objectively. Youth, and adults too, should realise the onus is on them to self-regulate what they post and to comment objectively besides being polite and civic-minded as per their language choices and content via this virtual landscape.
“Debates enable such young teams to put forth their points via constructive discourse supported by well-researched facts and creative, witty innuendos to whet the attention and interest of the audience,’’ explained Dr. Moniza who is also a senior lecturer in Political Communication.
MCMC’s Senior Director of Advocacy and Outreach Division, Eneng Faridah Iskandar expressed full support for this inaugural competition, explaining “We want this audience, who are at an influential age, to fully understand MCMC’s role which contributes towards steering the development, application and appreciation of Malaysia’s digital landscape.
“Youth today communicate anytime, anywhere and anyway, using different digital devices and different Internet applications tools and we want them to communicate in a responsible manner, being mindful and respecting who they are addressing and interacting with.
“All the more critical to teach and remind all Malaysians that the Rukun Negara’s principles form the basis to choice communications and respectful behaviour over the Internet,” concluded Eneng.
The winning team of the inaugural MCMC Debating Championship 2015 had successfully debated the motion on the progress of communication and multimedia has helped build national unity and national identity.
