Illegal to use jamming devices, people told

05 Jun 2002, Bernama
It is an offence for anyone to use or possess any type of communication frequency jamming device or cellular phone blockers, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission warned yesterday. The use of such equipment or system could endanger the security and safety of individuals and society, it said in a statement yesterday. It said that the use of such equipment could totally disrupt the communications and activity of cellular phones and went against the Government's intention to ensure that the public had free and easy access to such communication networks. In addition, jamming gadgets also had the potential to interfere with the communication networks of emergency services like ambulance and the Fire and Rescue Services Department, the statement said. The use of such equipment or system is an offence under Section 182 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, while under the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000, it is an offence to sell or possess the equipment. Those using the jamming equipment can be fined up to RM500,000 or jailed five years, or both, while those who have or sell them can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed for six months, or both. The Commission said the use of such devices was also illegal in several other countries, including United States and Australia.
