KUALA LUMPUR: The sending of advertisements via SMS to mobile phones will be reviewed to prevent consumers from being harassed by unsolicited messages, said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
He added that the ministry had received many complaints from the public who had received advertisements via SMS, with some of the messages being sexual in nature.
“SMS sent to telephone users should not contain messages seeking to market anything,” he said after chairing a meeting of the Communications, Content and Infrastructure sector of the National Key Economic Area here yesterday.
Rais said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would go through the complaints and deliberate with telecommunications companies to come up with a solution.
He also said the ministry would review the cost of downloading songs online to ensure that the copyright owners and singers garnered a reasonable profit from the transactions.
On a separate matter during the closing of the Malaysian Taxi, Limousine, Rental Car Drivers Association (Petekma) Budget 2013 and forum, Rais said a survey would be carried out by the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) to look into the education, welfare and needs of children of taxi drivers.
