Cops keeping tabs on tweet vice offers

KUALA LUMPUR: City police have been keeping an eye on prostitution rackets offering services through Twitter and other websites. City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police have been monitoring these syndicates for some time now. “There are a number of websites offering ‘extra services’ under the guise of escort services in the Klang Valley. We are gathering intelligence on these syndicates and will take action against them soon,” he said in an interview. SAC Ku said the “escorts” could be investigated for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution under Section 272b of the Penal Code. The Star reported yesterday on a syndicate which offers “social escorts” to foreign visitors via Twitter. They would capitalise on major events held here like the recent Formula 1 Grand Prix. It sent out tweets such as “Malaysia escorts for F1 GP race in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Hotel escorts.” City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh had been quoted as saying that police would work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to shut down online prostitution services. However, he acknowledged that it was a challenge to prove the act of soliciting as most vice rings were constantly on the move.
