MCMC Calls For Proposals For Research Collaborations

25 Apr 2014, Bernama
KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is inviting researchers attached to registered tertiary institutions in Malaysia to submit their proposals for the Networked Media Research Collaboration Programme (NMRC Programme).

The programme is a collaborative initiative between the MCMC and the Malaysian tertiary institutions with the primary objective of enhancing knowledge, research and development in relation to networked media policy and regulations.

The programme was established in 2008 as part of MCMC's commitment towards the realisation of the National Policy Objectives for the communications and multimedia industry, the MCMC said in a statement Friday.

Eneng Faridah Iskandar, the senior director of MCMC's Outreach and Engagement Division, said: "The programme consolidates information, knowledge, research and development involving networked media policies and regulations.

"It helps to develop knowledge resources and credible information data related to the use of networked media outlets by Malaysians.

"Various parties from MCMC and researchers come together for a common platform for added collaborations, sharing and exchange of knowledge and expertise concerning networked media content," she said.

From the data compiled, it enables relevant regulatory bodies and agencies to assess policy effectiveness.

The type of research funded under the NMRC programme carry common research themes such as media literacy and social impact studies to capture the social and behavioural dimensions of issues that are sought to be understood; available funds range from RM50,000 to RM200,000 for projects covering a period of six months to two years," Eneng said.

Given the increased availability of broadband, there is a growing emphasis on research to build information resources on the use of content applications services, particularly where patterns of consumption of the media and communications are changing across the demography.

Past research funded under the programme include studies on the social influence of bloggers and how it shaped opinions and actions in young adults, the public awareness impact of MCMC's "Klik Dengan Bijak/Click Wisely" campaign, on Internet Safety, how social media is being used by younger users as well as the effectiveness of the self-regulatory framework in the media environment, its issues and challenges particularly among media practitioners.

Closing date for receiving applications is at noon on Friday (May 9, 2014).
