MCMC : Calm Down And Stop Spreading Hatred Online

08 May 2013, Bernama
CYBERJAYA, May 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urged the public to stop sending, sharing and posting 'hate speech' in the social media.

“As responsible citizens, we must be more sensitive and aware while communicating online. Think about the consequences and the feelings of our fellow brothers and sisters before posting comments or opinions in the social media. If possible, avoid communicating when your emotions are running high. Please calm down before you post anything,” said MCMC chairman, Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi.

“Every citizen in this country needs to abide by the laws and regulations especially pertaining to online or offline platforms. If there are individuals who are unhappy with certain issues and need explanation, it should be channeled to the proper authorities, in accordance with the rule of law,” he added.

At the same time, Dato’ Mohamed Sharil also urged fellow Malaysians not to be influenced by emotions and issues which are detrimental to the harmony of this country.

The MCMC Chairman also reminded the public that not all information published online in the social media should be accepted as the truth. The sender of any information is also capable of disguise or identity fraud. It is therefore vital for the public to verify the authenticity of the information before uploading it.
