01 May 2013, The Malay Mail

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has summoned 15 individuals to give their statements and assist in investigations following the dissemination of text message rumours and defamatory remarks which have become more prevalent lately.

MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said among the examples of rumours were on riots during 13th general election and those calling on the people to hoard essential goods in anticipation of riots taking place.

"Spreading such rumours is an offence under the Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. We are cooperating with the police in several investigations and if there is sufficient evidence to prosecute, the individuals who carried out the offences will be charged.

"All parties should think twice before forwarding any news and information received. Verify the information from official sources," he said in a statement here yesterday.

MCMC also found the bullying trend in the cyber space as becoming more widespread during the 13th general election as elements of threats and defamation are criminal offences under the Penal Code, he said.

"If a crime takes place whether it is in the virtual or real world, it still constitutes an offence. There is no difference," he said.
